Focus: Predicting

Day 4: Thursday, April 8, 201X


6) Attention-Getter: (5 min)

The teacher will read the picture book and Native American tale Raccoon's Last Race by Joseph Bruchac.

7) Activities; model → guided practice → independent practice:

A. Model (20 min)

  • The teacher will model how to use the text to support predictions.
  • (Some students will have already completed this part in their packets.  Call on these students to add to discussion.  What were they predicting would happen next in their novels?)
  • The teacher will make a chart while reading.
  • The chart will display the title, the strategy, student ideas (using student's names) and the evidence from the text.  After the story is over, review which predictions were confirmed.

B. Guided Practice (35min)

  • Before going into stations, the students will mingle with others in the class about their predictions in their novels.
  • The teacher will have four students complete their Book Talks while the other students are moving to the stations. 
  • Students will bring post-its with them.
  • Students will move throughout stations.
  • Some students will meet with the teacher to discuss "My questions", "Character Sketch", or "Self Talk" strategies.
  • Some students will work with a partner on "Context Clues"
  • Some students will read quietly with their group.

C. Individual (30 min)

  • Some students will read independently, or work on skills such as "Writing Prompt", Spelling activities, "Predict-a-Plot" and "Visualizing poetry".
